How to Create AI Animation in 2026 & Top Platforms to Use

How to Create AI Animation in 2026 & Top Platforms
"The gap between AI slop and professional animation is discipline and art direction."

If we go back a few years, animation used to be the work of skilled artists who would spend hours creating each single frame. It still is, but thanks to AI, today you don’t need top-notch animation skills to animate something: there are tens of tools that do this.

All you need is a wild imagination and the ability to put your thoughts into words, and you can create animations that look nearly as good as the real thing. If you think you’ve got that in you, keep reading! This article will tell you exactly how you can create high quality AI animation videos by yourself in 2026 and what tools you can use to get top-notch results (with the least defects at least).

Let’s jump in!

The Essentials – From Start to Finish

So, creating an AI animation is easier compared to the traditional methods. However, it doesn’t mean you won’t have to make some effort. That being said, let’s have a look at some major steps involved in AI animation creation. We will also discuss some common problems you might face along the way, with specific solutions that could work.

Let’s have a look:

Step #1: Concept Development

Even AI cannot help you if you don’t have a good concept in place. AI cannot make content out of thin air. It relies on prompts, references, and the human intelligence and creativity guiding it behind the scenes. That’s why concept development remains at the core of any top-notch AI video production.

That being said, we can technically break down the process of concept development into three fundamental steps:

Inspiration gathering

A) Reference Gathering

As you know, it is the first step in any creative project and serves as a foundation for the creative direction of your animation. While you can generate static frames right out of your imagination using AI tools, working without references can result in unclear direction and inconsistent outputs.

Using reference images from platforms like Pinterest, Dribbble, and Behance as an inspiration can help you visualize and sketch your ideas better, reducing a lot of back and forth with prompts at later stages of production.

B) Competitor Research

Just like any normal animation project, competitor research is necessary to identify strengths and weaknesses of their respective videos, identify which production technique works best and see gaps where you think you could get an edge over the competitor brands. If the specific video is solely for advertising, analyze competitor animations for their structure, storytelling and insertion of CTAs.

C) Sketching Your Ideas

Most people skip this step and jump straight to AI tools to generate frames and videos. However, as we mentioned earlier, this culminates in the results being highly generic, and you have to then go back and forth with the prompts to make something that’s even remotely relatable to your ideas.

Sketching story for AI video

By sketching out your ideas clearly beforehands, you ensure that every character, every movement, and every scene is aligned with your imagination. In fact, you can even feed your sketches directly to the AI tools with relevant prompts to turn them into high-resolution polished images. You can then turn the same frames into videos.

Step# 2: Generation of Static Frames

Static frame development is easier than you think. As we mentioned earlier, you can either feed your sketches directly to the AI image generation tool to turn them into colorful, high-resolution static images. Or, if you are confident with prompts, you can describe your concept to the AI tool, and it will generate a high-resolution image based on words alone.

What we would personally recommend is to feed your sketches to the image generation tool. Then head over to ChatGPT and use it to generate prompts for you based on your particular creative requirements. You can then go back and forth with those prompts to adjust the camera angles, lighting, mood, texture, and cinematic style, etc., until everything perfectly aligns with your vision.

Character Generation Close Up

Once finalized, you can use these particular prompts in your image-generation tool to produce polished static frames with your sketches as a core reference. This way, you ensure that the final results are just the way you want, with maximum creative control in your hands. You will be basically bringing your sketches to life just the way they are. Cool right?

As for which tools you can use for generating static frames, I highly recommend checking Nano Banana Pro, Whisk AI and Midjourney.

I find Midjourney creations more adhering to the prompt and have a better styling depth compared to the other two. Nano Banana Pro seems to be good at editing images and can replace your Photoshop manual work. Do expect some glitches and hallucinations where it ignores your prompt and keeps generating the same image over and over again.

Character Generation Side view

When working on AI video production, you usually need to try multiple Gen AI platforms to do A/B testing and see which one is adhering to your prompts better. So don’t limit yourself to only one or two platforms. Your goal must be to get the best result with the least amount of prompt tweaking and credit usage.

Step #3: Art Directing the AI

At this stage, we assume you have generated hundreds of static frames with your AI image generation tools. Now you want to turn them into one high-quality video. But there’s a problem: some of the images generated are visually inconsistent. In one frame, the face is slightly changed; in the other, the lighting is not quite right. In some frames, you may even see some character redesign.

This is where your job comes in as a creative director!

Character Art Direction - Static Generation

What you’ll need to do is analyze each frame individually and look for things that feel off. Once you identify some inconsistencies, you can either go back to ChatGPT and ask it to modify the prompts based on your input or directly modify your prompts in the image generation tool. Generally, ChatGPT does the job much more efficiently when it comes to modifying prompts. All you need to do is lay down your requirements in simple words, and leave the rest to ChatGPT.

Your next job comes in when you enter the video generation phase of the production. As you generate the AI animated footage, see if it follows the basic animation principles. This is the stage where AI animations generally fall short of real ones. If you put enough effort here, even your AI animations could look close to the real stuff.

As you examine the animated footage, look for little nuances. Are the movements smooth? Are the silhouettes clear? Is the spacing proper? Is there enough emotional exaggeration for the expressions to be instantly readable? In short, does the AI video overall follow the classic principles of animation? If it ticks most of the boxes, the results are going to be great. If not, you can improve as much as you can.

Step #4: Upscaling Process

Most of the AI tools generate footage in 720p or 1080p. In the modern scene, the more polished your content is, the more credible your brand becomes. Proper upscaling can turn 720p or 1080p into 2k and 4k, making it cleaner, sharper, and more vibrant and suitable for both big and small screens.

If you’re using a generative AI tool like VEO 3, SORA 2, Kling AI, or Grok Imagine, you can upscale your animations and frames inside these platforms easily. However, that would require premium subscriptions, e.g., more money.

As you upscale your animations through AI tools, make sure to double-check the video. Sometimes, upscaling can result in the loss of some details or poorly reconstructed objects. This can result in the animations looking unnatural.

Alternatively, you can upscale the images or AI footage inside Adobe Premiere Pro and After Effects manually. But that will require knowing these software. However, on the bright side, you’ll have much more control, and the results could be far better than using AI for the same task.

Step #5: The Voice & Lip Sync Problems and Solutions

Other than inconsistent characters, one of the biggest issues many creators face with AI tools is inconsistent voice synchronization. Sometimes, the mouth movement lags behind fast dialogue, and other times, the opposite happens.

In some cases, the voice generated might fail to capture the emotional tone of the dialogue, making the scene feel flat. While you can regenerate such scenes by slightly altering the prompts, this is not always a good idea. It could waste a lot of time and could result in new, and sometimes, even worse visual inconsistencies.

One way to overcome this issue is to change the voice without needing to re-do the lip sync. Platforms like ElevenLabs have a feature called voice changer. It works like a miracle. You extract the voice from your generated video and upload it onto the platform. Then select a new voice. The platform creates the new voice over at high quality and follows the exact same pace and timing of your original voice file. Bingo! You now can replace the crappy voice the Gen AI made earlier with your version. No lip-syncing required.

You can also use some platforms that do the lip syncing but it costs more credits and the result might not be great. Basically the entire video gets regenerated with a new lip sync which is risky.

Step #6: Post-Production

Post-production for AI animation is just the same as any other animated content. The only difference is: it’s much easier. Post-production for AI animations typically includes a few things like color correction, adding transitions, adding visual effects (if needed), and enhancing sound design and background music.

If you intend to upscale your video manually, you could include that in the post-production too. You’ll be doing most of this stuff in Adobe Premiere Pro and Adobe After Effects. Post production is one the things that separates AI slop from high-quality AI animations.

Make sure to invest as much of your time here as possible. You’ll thank me later.

Gen AI Platforms to Use: Our The Top Choices

For videos, there are three industry-standard platforms everyone’s using at the moment. Let’s look at a brief overview of each to help you decide which one to choose:

Kling.Ai

Kling.AI is a video generation platform that can generate video from text prompts and images. Although Kling is generally known for creating photorealistic footage, it can generate both 2D and 3D footage.

It is primarily known for its ability to generate long, continuous shots and realistic motion graphics, along with cinematic camera controls like dolly zoom, racking shots, and rack focuses etc for maximum creative control.

One thing it struggles with is maintaining consistency across frames. But that can be fixed with a little bit of manual work. The monthly subscription for Kling. Ai ranges from $8 to $127. If you are working as an AI video service provider, the best package would be the Ultra that offers 26000 credits (as of today) which is equal to roughly 1000 videos.

Google VEO 3

Google VEO 3, at this moment, is the most advanced text-to-video and image-to-video generative AI tool in the market with a very intuitive interface for both beginners and skilled animators.

Just like Kling, it can generate both photo-realistic and 2D/3D animations with realistic movements. It also provides advanced camera control to the users just like Kling. However, just like any AI tool, it comes with its limitations, which you would need to fix in post-production.

Monthly plans can cost up to $249.99/month. Each package have different features and number of credits. Realistically speaking, the only thing that puts it behind Kling or other tools is its price. It’s really expensive compared to its alternatives. And quite frankly, when it comes to animation, I had far better results and controls with Kling.Ai than this one.

Grok Imagine

Grok Imagine is the latest AI video generation tool on the market that does all the things that the aforementioned tools can do. The best thing about Grok Imagine? It doesn’t work on the tokens/credits system, and allows you to make as many videos and images as you want.

Although there’s a cap on how many videos you can generate within 24 hours, you’re probably not going to reach that limit, and it will reset the next day anyway. This makes it a very reliable and cost-effective choice compared to both VEO 3 and Kling. AI, while essentially providing the same results.

The monthly subscription for Grok Imagine starts from $30.

Seedance 2.0

Seedance 2.0 is the latest AI video generation model that has been making a lot of waves recently due to its high-quality nearly flawless outputs. It was officially launched in February 2026. I have yet to test it but checking what others did with it shows a lot of potential.

Unfortunately, access is not yet fully open for global users (as of writing of this article), so if you want to use it now you need to do it through selected ByteDance products or Dreamina by Capcut. Be ready to fire up your Chinese translators as you will need them.

Update 01 June 2026

I have finally tested Seedance 2.0 on the OpenArt platform. It produces the best acting and camera direction results compared to others. However, when it comes to 3D animation, I experienced better outputs with Kling AI. As for the credit cost, Seedance costs a lot more per generation than the others especially as you increase the duration from 5 seconds to 20+ seconds.

Node Based Gen AI Platforms

Node based AI generators are platforms that let you connect different AI models (through nodes). They offer a structured workflow that makes it a lot more organized for video animation creators. In my opinion the biggest advantage of such platforms is that you don’t have to jump between different Gen AI websites. You get everything in one place. Here are my favorites:

Weavy

I tried Weavy for a while and it really feels like you are building a creative machine rather than using a single generator. It gives you a node-based workspace. And each node is a specific step in your production process.

For example, you can generate an image or video with your choice of model (many available), the apply mask or blend layers, or add compositing node to get professional editing features. Everything you do will cost you credit of course.

Speaking of pricing, the Free plan gives 150 monthly credits, which in my opinion is good for testing the water. The Starter plan provides around 1,500 credits per month and lets you top up credits at roughly $10 per 1,000 credits. The Professional plan gives about 4,000 monthly credits with rollover for unused ones and lets you top up at about $10 per 1,200 credits.

Krea Nodes

I have not tried Krea Nodes myself yet, but from what they show, it works very similar to Weavy. You connect different AI models into one workflow so you can generate, refine and export without jumping between separate Gen Ai platforms. It makes sense for creators who want less clutter in their generative AI process.

According to their website, the Free plan gives 100 compute units per day to test the platform. Paid plans start with Basic at $9 per month, which includes 5,000 compute units. The Pro plan at $35 per month gives 20,000 compute units and full access to video models. The Max plan at $105 per month includes 60,000 compute units with higher limits and priority processing.

On paper, it looks like you are getting a lot more credits for the money compared to Weavy, but that is usually not the case. Krea could be charging much more per generation. So do check the actual credit usage per task before going all the way in with your wallet.
